For free software

Then download Windows Defender

www.microsoft.com/downloads

But if you want something reasonable and has FREE tech support as soon as you purchase it. Support will be imporatnt if your mother encounter some problem.

Use

That is the Windows Live ONECARE

AVG has a full suite of free anti-virus, anti-adware and anti-spyware.

Also, put a decent firewall on there (don't rely on the MS firewall. I recommend ZoneAlarm.
McAfee and Norton are two of the most well-known, with Norton probably dominating the market. You can download Ad-Aware and Spybot free. Not so for Norton, but when you consider it is for a full year's protection, it's not so bad. If you keep checking the ads in your local paper and do some searching online, you might catch a deal. I recently bought a two-license subscription with Norton for $9.99 (it was a one-day sale).
