Someone had logged onto my brother's mesenger this morning and posted a link to a phishing website. I knew it was him as I text himm to say that the link 'he' sent me was dodgy, and he said it wasn't him. I logged on via computer, then the mobile symbol disappeared. He checked is computer for spyware/trojans etc, but found nothing. He does have good security as he is computer savvy. He has not used another computer or tells his password to other. Would someone have guessed a secure password? He has since changed the password and has no problems. Anyone have any ideas how the password was access by someone else?

sometimes when you check messenger or msn hotmail or yahoo mail, whichever computer you use will save the last used logon details all it will take is for someone to click log on. Whenever he or anyone else does this they must ensure that they log out completely. because he changed the password, it will no longer work. Perhaps he has a keylogger on his computer, which detects the keypresses made and 'logs' them onto the hackers computer. Of course if he was daft enough to have it on his phone or has has written it down, then that is aother way it could have happened

What's the best security suite for my computer. I've had everything(viruses, keyloggers, spware, adware, worms, etc.) in my computer and I want one the will protect from them, and if necessary, remove them from my computer. Very, very good updated definnitions would be good and scans shouldn't be too slow or computer-resource using(e.g. Norton). It doesn't matter how much it costs so....Anybody know any software suite like that?

Check with your internet provider. Road Runner provides CA free to its users. If your running xp or above you probably have free versions that just need to be set to auto update. I personally don't like Mckaffe, whatever. I like Norton, I love my Computer Associates. I love my CA firewall. Works like a charm. I run Wifi at the house and work. Find a local supplier specializing in small business. You need to look at three areas to secure your network:

1) The perimeter. This means using a firewall between your office network and the outside world. Sonic wall makes some excellent easy to use firewalls with far more functionality than the least expensive products sold by linksys, belkin etc.

2) The individual PC's. You need anti virus, anti spyware/malware software on each PC. Many of these products are difficult to use and or they use a lot of your PC's computing power to protect it leaving little available for the PC to do your work!.. Trend Micro has good products. avg (www.grisoft.com) has inexpensive products with a light footprint on your pc, Microsoft one care is an inexpensive product with a light footprint that even handles backups. Further each license is good for 3 PC's

I wouldn't use Trendmicro at all. They want you to pay them. I have used AVG Free version for a number of years. It's free to download, it updates for free, and it doesn't slow your system down. It doesn't cause problems like that, either.

Yes. You won't get a virus unless you open an attachment that is infected.

Chatting (yahoo messenger, AIM, etc) is usually safe, unless someone sends you a file over the chat interface. The danger with chatting is giving out personal info, and no program can prevent you from doing that. Just don't do it.
most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

You are safer as long as you keep up to date. If you have anti virus program you are around 90% protected. If the email did have a virus you should be fine against it. It is possible to send viruses threw email and attachments.

You'll have to read McAfee's help files on how to remove malware. It should be self explanitory. I'd advise to restart the computer in safe mode http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorial... and run the virus scan that way. Also download Ad-aware and run that in safe mode too. Make sure first that all the defitions are updated.

If the pop up is telling you that you have a virus and you need virus protect pro or virus cleaner to delete it, then you may need more than just an antivirus.

Download HijackThis (http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-Hija... run it with a log and post it on a tech forum like this one: http://www.techsupportforum.com/security... and await help.

In the end, it might be easier to reinstall windows, especially if you have a rootkit.

I have a security program on my computer but since yesterday, I've been getting pop-ups every two minutes telling me to download stuff because my computer is at risk from a virus. I know it's fake because it's linked to advertising websites. Also, every hour or so, sites with links for porn pop up. When the firewall is turned on (on my notebook) I cannot connect to my network. As soon as I turn off the firewall, it connects. I think you also have a firewall feature in Norton. You have a choice; either you can turn on windows standard fire wall or Norton. It is recommended to use Norton Firewall. Hopefully you are updating Norton with latest patches online to prevent your PC from latest viruses.

I recently had to format my computer as I think I had a really bad virus on it. Now though, my computer is really slow, almost like dial up for some sites. Hi there, it is very hard to answer your problem without knowing what the full specification of your PC is and what operating system you are running on it.

I have had many bring their PCs to me with this sort of problem and usually a complete reformat and re-installation of the operating system does the trick. If there is no noticeable improvement at this stage before installing or downloading any further programs then check that you memory cards have not become unseated on your processor, if OK then add one program at a time and check performance after.

What is Computer Forensics? How can I study this field more indepthly?

I study Information Technology at OmniTECH. The Security+ course touched on Computer Forensics. I'd really like to study this field more indepthly. But I need help. My opinion about Computer Science is that it isn't at all that in depth, but more so like a generalized knowledge of Programming. I am not into the algorithm, math and coding that comes along with programming. The most I deal with is navigating through Solaris. And to study ''Information Technology'' depends on the school's perspective of what Information Technology is. I have been researching schools who offer Computer Forensics courses. They are anywhere from 2 years down to 5 days. I don't know which to choose because I can't clearly define what Computer Forensics is. Longer or extended doesn't necessarily mean more indepth because Bauder College's IT program lasts 2 years. OmniTECH Institute has an IT program with more course and certifications than Bauder College and it is only 8 months long. Please help.

Yeah, wireless is a REAL PAIN to get going.. and to be honest, if your PC is right next to the wireless router, you might as well connect using the (usually blue wire) cable that came with the Router and turn off the wireless function (via the Belkin utility software)

Anyway, if you really need wireless, then if your PC can connect to the Belkin router via wireless, what's to stop some-one else doing the same thing ?

Plainly for this to work, then BOTH your PC and the Belkin router must know what the key is (i.e you will have to set up the (same) key at both your PC and the Belkin).

To get the Belkin going, it's possible you have been instructed to turn off the Firewall (in the Belkin) .. if that's the case you are not as well protected as you should be.

I suggest ask a friend to help you secure your system.

For security reasons the network at work deny's users the right to write information to the C Drive. Data storage is carried out on the server. This means that the very sensitive data is secure and backed up regularly. Programs can write/read/delete data to the C drive but that is it. But being that Winzip is a program it seems to have the relevant rights to write to the C drive. This is a security risk as the computers on this network are completely locked down. No USB, floppy or CD writers, necessary for the type of sensitive data that is being handled. The problem is that any user who was in the right mind to want any of the data off the server would be able to zip it into a folder on the C drive then bust the case of the computer open take the HD drive out, slave it to another machine, rip the data off and return it, possibly with no one being any wiser? Is there any way of limiting a user within winzip to stop it from having access to the C drive? Without CPU case alarms?

If you're using XP it has a built in zip and unzip; so you don't need Winzip!

Right click on any file and select Send to - and there should be a zipped folder option.

Just make sure that all traces of Norton are uninstalled. Even leftover traces can interfear with other security programs. Norton can be very difficult to uninstall, but they have a removal tool for it at the Symantic website.

I suspect many of those spyware softwares are not what you think they are. Spybot and adaware is probably all you need for spyware removal, you need antivirus software and you need a firewall, this will cover you from the 3 most important perspectives of intrusion and malicious attacks.

As for auto registry cleaners and magic ''make my computer faster'' software, they are bad ideas all together.

I recommend you install your system fresh, install spyware protection, install anti-virus, install a good firewall (Like Zone Alarm) and then install your basics like ms office and larger, reputable software packages. Next make a ghost image of your machine and then if your machine starts running real slow then save your personal data and reimage your machine with the fresh image that you know is good and you will be back to 100% in minutes. If you want your computer to go faster than it already does and you have a fresh install of windows on it then you probably need to upgrade your hardware.

You can run defrag or there should be a disk cleanup option under my computer. Otherwise you will just have to go through what you want to keep and what you don't want to keep or get more hard drive space or upgrade to a computer with more ram. I recently had 2 or 3 viruses on my computer (one Trojan virus from myspace). All of them are now off my computer, but there's still problems when I go on the internet. I don't know if it's Spyware or Adware or whatever, but different websites keep popping up. Every time it says ''Internet Speed Monitor'' at the top of the screen next to the Internet Explorer symbol, but it's a different website every time. Try to reset your IE to original manufacture setting,this will return all setting that may be changed from the worm or trojan u got infected with,this will also return your home page to the default one.....this can be done if you ar using IE7 from tools,internet option,advanced then click Reset in the reset internet explorer setting.

click 'tools' (at the top of your page)

click 'internet options'

click 'security'

now, make sure it is set to medium or medium high.

click 'apply' and then 'okay' and restart your browser.

It sounds like you have turned off fast user switching. Now instead of just bringing up task manager, you'll get the windows security console when you press ctrl-alt-del. This setting can be changed in the control panel under user accounts.

If you have an application that requires fast user switching to be disabled, a workaround is to press ctrl-shift-esc to bring up task manager in one key sequence.

The laptop is a dell inspiron 1520 and it has windows vista home premium. I am trying to connect it to my wireless internet through an access point which works with my dad's laptop, but when i click connect to the network, it does not even ask for the encription key, it says ''windows cannot connect to ...'' I clicked diagnose the problem and it told me to ''view the wireless security settings on this computer to verify they are compatible with this network.''

Now i am stuck trying to find these settings.

Did you uninstall the toolbar? If you just deleted something like it's folders, it is still there and will re-infect. Unistall ALL toolbars and internet optimisers/seacrch assitants. Then run a fully updated spyware scan and virus scan.

This problem has happened 4 times since August and each time I have to contact my IPS I am told there is nothing wrong with their side - it must be my Wireless connection - they then tell me it's not a problem with the modem - it must be Norton AntiVirus Security. I have had computer programmers in to slove this - and each time it seems to be a different cause. If anyone out there can advise me, I'd be really greatful, as this problem leaves me without my computer for up to 5 days, until I can get help.

Well, let see your problem seems to be connection between your computer and the router. Since you mention you are running wireless network, I assume you have correct wireless setting and you used to be able to browse any web page without problem. My suggestion is get a CAT5 cable (network cable) and directly connect between your router and your computer. If this solve your problem, that means your wireless setting has problem. It could be range problem or some misconfiguration, I cannot tell you how to setup this without the router vendor name (different vendor has different setting). My computer came with McAfee Internet Security and it works well enough. But, I will have to come up with seventy dollars to subscribe for another year of protection.

Netzero wants me to use Norton security. I tried installing it on my computer and it jammed everything up. I had to uninstall it. They want only two dollars a month for the Norton security service, but I don't know if they are not offering as much as Mcaffee or not.

I supposed I could uninstall Mcafee to install Norton, but I don't have software for reinstalling Mcaffee if I change my mind about Norton.

So which do you think is better with the better deal, with the better security, with the better price?

You have to boot from the OS CD. Insert the CD into the optical drive and reboot your machine. It should load the startup routine for the OS.

If it doesn't, go into the BIOS when the machine is first booting up (what key you press depends upon make, but F2 and Del are common ones, and it usually tells you on the computer screen which key to press to enter ''startup'') and make the optical drive the first boot device. Then it will boot from the CD and you can install your operating system.

I would advise against Norton as this can really slow your pc down. You could either purchase a new antivirus or download AVG which is free. You should also perform maintenance regularly i.e, clear cookies etc delete old files. (check your free memory) Also if you have other anti spyware/virus running on top of Norton they will conflict and cause stop errors freezes. Check for updates If you have lots of music photos, back these up to cd or memory stick and clear them off. Run an error check if anything comes up then you should be able to repair with original disk. hope this helps.

norton is poo. unload the programme and install antivir Personal edition classic. runs better than norton, and I have never had any probs. checks your computer every few hours for you.
Ok since that sounds hopeless to me i would just reformat the computer. Not sure the exact specifics for your computer you may have to put in the cd it came with if it did. But reformatting totally deletes everything on your computer.. Well it makes it brand new.

My computer has been running smoothly for about 4 years now. However suddenly over the last few days, it has started running extremely slow and constantly freezing to the point where the computer is unusable (am using sisters comp to write this).

My norton security is upto date, i regularly defrag etc and look after the computer.

I recently went wireless (security protected). I dont know if this has anything to do with it.

A virus scan revealed a trojan (but was only a low threat) which has been deleted but the computer is still running poorly.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this? before i reformat the computer?

Being an IT Manager, I firmly believe you get what you pay for, PERIOD. Using a combination of freebies will cost you not a dime, but will cost you PLENTY of performance on your computer, and in many cases bring it to a standstill. The best pay AV/AS I've found, that I use on all our office machines and mine at home is BitDefender. Very reasonably priced and has been doing the right thing for us here for over a year. Doesn't weigh down your system like Norton, McAfee or Panda. BitDefender does have a freebie available, but again, you get what you pay for. Trend Micro is also decent, not slowing your computer alot, but is pretty pricey compared to BitDefender. Cheers!

i went away to college, and they have you install security programs on your computer. While i was at school i had to install a bunch of other things as well, i downloaded aim, and stuff like that so i could talk to my friends, adobe reader, and things like that. now im at home, and i wanted to uninstall everything that i dont use becuase my desktop looked like a mess. so i did. its currently not hooked up to any internet or anything. ever since i did that, every time i try to log on, or try to click on anything, it starts to load, but just ends up looking stuck and a blurry picture. Back up your data and reinstall Windows from the CD that should have come with your laptop. Sounds like you removed some things you shouldn't have. While it might be possible to figure them all out, and reinstall them, it probably would take a lot more time and effort.

while attempting file download from Unknown Zone, a small yellow box comes up with 3 options 'Open' 'save' 'cancel' along-with a security caution at the end, and a checkbox(with default checkmark) containing a message 'Always ask before opening this type of files' . I am in great problem after I unckecked the checkbox. All large files with that particular extension(.csv) are opening direct on my browse. well there are many options. the best one would be to check system restore in control panel. and restore the os to a previous date. you can also make a disk partition and isntall another os, then tranfers your old files to the new os. Also dont mind much about that box that comes up when you try to download a file. its only a warning it doenst do anything. get a firewall and customize it to do this instead of that useless box.

Don't bother that alerts.

But I need to advised you that AVG is useless.

Try change to Avira antivir or active virus shield.
GabrielB has provided you with the correct info on changing alerts. If you are automatically updating your virus defs for AVG using the scheduler you shouldn't have a problem with those alerts anyway. It is definitely recommended to keep auto updates for windows on, unless of course you are running a pirate copy of XP which won't allow you to update.

On the subject of AVG - check out their awards and certifications. They get the same certs from the big names as Avira and don't bother with a whole bunch of awards from pissy little contests held in Germany only. 100% detection rate that's what it's about and that's what they concentrate on, not entering contests. Be assured that what you are using is just as good as Avira.

and go in search , type in Mcafee and delete remaining files that may be still there.

Then reinstall it. It happened to one of my students and this fixed his ..same problem.

you shouldn't have the same problem after you reinstall it. OH !! clean up your disc ..disc cleanup , defrag etc before reinstalling it so it will run smoother.
